Many of you have shared your concern about the learning process. For some, it is not easy and you have asked me how to find it easier and how to gain confidence.
I will post some tips on confidence soon!
Here are some tips to find the learning process enjoyable and motivating:
You could start by practising English with an activity that you really like.
TIPS❗
- If you like music, you can listen to English songs and sing along, look for the lyrics and try to translate them. That will help you with your pronunciation by imitating native accents and to find the meaning to words and sentences. There is a website where you can do that and it is quite good: lyricstraining.
- Some of my students who loved playing computer games would join groups of players who communicated in English and this way their English naturally improved and became very natural and accurate.
- If you like reading, that's wonderful! It is one of the best ways to learn, consolidate and improve your English. You could go to the local library and borrow books according to your level. There is always an English section where you can find little books by levels.
- If you like socialising, try to find native speakers who want to meet to have a conversation language exchange.
You could join a group of people who are interested in talking in English, or you could even start this group and meet up once a week, once a month.
That would be fun!
- Immerse yourself in English, have your Apps messages and format in English, listen to the radio, podcasts in English. Read the news in English.
- Watch films or documentaries. If your English is not that advanced I recommend you watch parts of the films in English like this:
2nd day _ 15 minutes and stop for the words you don't know and write them down
3rd day _ 20 minutes and so on
Finish the film _ watch it again with English subtitles
Be happy for your achievement!
You can now understand much better the film. Films are a good way to improve your listening skills, as you can see the images and you can hear different accents.
If you don't understand 100% of the film, you may be a little frustrated. BUT you know that even in advanced levels this is barely impossible. You will gradually improve your listening skills, little by little. Let's say you start watching a film and you understand only 30% of it. Next time you will understand 40%, next time 45% and every time you will improve. This is a slow process but you have to keep practising.
