Having a job interview is nerve-racking. But if you know that part of the interview will be in English, that can be even more frightening.
Here are some tips on how to work on your interview and look confident:
SHORT AND EASY
You do not need to speak for England. You can answer a question with 2 or 3 well-structured sentences with good pronunciation. This will sound professional.
Choose your vocabulary carefully and prepare in advance.
Some interviewers may only ask you: What did you do last weekend?
This question is aimed at how you react, if you use the past tense correctly and if you are fluent in English on a daily life situation.
For this question you may answer: Last weekend I was very busy. On Saturday I cleaned and tidied up my house. I went shopping for food and in the afternoon I went for a walk and met some friends. On Sunday I went to my parents' for lunch and relaxed with them after the meal. Then, I went to see my partner / girlfriend / boyfriend and we hung out together, we had a drink and met some mutual friends.
The first part of this speech has basic past tense verbs which is ok for a beginners, pre-intermediate level or A2/B1 level. If you want to show off your English, you could add a colloquial phrasal verb like ´hang out´which will show you have a B2 level.
Pronunciation tip!
Listen to the audio and repeat. Focus on the sound of -ed endings.
Some interviewers may ask you a more sophisticated question: Tell me about your past experience or What is your current job?
On the first question you will use the past tense and on the second one the present continuous as you are talking about your current job.
Pronunciation tip!
Listen to the audio and repeat. Focus on the sound of -ed for the verb ´worked´ the sound is a /t/ .
